The Portland premiere of Lauren Yee’s comedy, King of the Yees, was an enhanced staged reading of Yee’s love letter to America’s Chinese communities.

In this hilarious and heartfelt generational story about culture, racial identity, and family, Yee explores why her father, who grew up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is such a devoted member of the Yee Fung Toy, a family association formed in the late 1800s to help Chinese immigrants navigate living and working in America under Chinese Exclusion. Featured actors included Dmae Roberts, Samson Syharath, Stan Egi, Khanh Doan, and Ray Tagavilla.
