Frances Maihwa Li: Symbols of the New Year
Spring 2026 Frances Maihwa Li (1944–2021) was a Shanghai‑born artist who trained in Taiwan with traditional masters in the subjects of botanical arrangements and landscape painting—core subjects of Chinese art. A skilled painter, calligrapher, and Ikebana practitioner, she specialized in flower painting inspired by her gardens.

Frances shared Chinese culture through decades of teaching in New York, Texas, and Oregon, serving as a school principal, community educator, and museum docent. Symbols of the New Year reflects her lifelong dedication to helping her community understand the rich symbolism of the Chinese New Year.
